Annual Fee
The yearly charge levied by the bank for maintaining and providing the benefits of a credit or debit card.
What is Annual Fee?
An annual fee is a charge that credit and debit card issuers levy once per year for maintaining your card and providing the associated benefits, rewards, and services.
How It Works
The annual fee is typically charged on the card anniversary date — the date your card was first issued or activated. It appears on your monthly statement and is added to your outstanding balance.
Most Indian banks charge annual fees in the range of:
- Basic cards: ₹0 – ₹500
- Mid-range cards: ₹500 – ₹3,000
- Premium cards: ₹3,000 – ₹12,500
- Super-premium cards: ₹12,500 – ₹60,000+
All fees are subject to 18% GST, so a card with a ₹1,000 annual fee will actually cost ₹1,180 per year.
Annual Fee vs. Joining Fee
The joining fee is a one-time charge when you first get the card, while the annual fee recurs every year. Some cards charge both, some charge only one, and some charge neither.
Fee Waivers
Many Indian cards waive the annual fee if you meet a minimum spending threshold. For example:
- Spend ₹1 lakh in a year → annual fee waived
- Spend ₹3 lakh in a year → annual fee reversed
Always check the fee waiver conditions before choosing a card.
Is an Annual Fee Worth It?
A card with an annual fee can still be excellent value if the benefits outweigh the cost. Calculate the net annual value:
Net Value = Total Benefits (cashback, rewards, lounge access, etc.) − Annual Fee (including GST)
For instance, the HDFC Infinia charges ₹12,500 + GST annually but can deliver ₹40,000+ in value through its 10X reward programme and unlimited lounge access — a net positive of over ₹25,000.
Lifetime Free (LTF) Cards
Some cards are marketed as “lifetime free” with no annual fee ever. Popular examples include:
- IDFC First Select — no joining or annual fee
- ICICI Amazon Pay — zero annual fee
- OneCard — no annual fee
These cards are ideal for people who want basic benefits without any recurring cost.
